ANTIQUE JAPANESE MURASAKI BLUE SILK KIMONO RAISED GOLD THREAD DRAGON EMBROIDERY:
$32.62

Iam not an expert but I believe this very fine quality, antique,Japanese kimono dates from the late C19th to the early C20th. Thedesign is a classic kimono form with wide cut sleeves and a fulllining in orange silk. This is an elaborate, formal kimono that wouldhave been worn for special occasions.

Thehem is padded to give extra body so the garment hangs correctly (although I have not pressed it, leaving that task for the buyer). Itis hand sewn throughout and made of silk. The exterior is embroideredwith a pair of very striking, metallic gold dragons and clouds raisedon a blue background. There is a matching silk sash with a delicatefringe and more embroidered clouds.

Theback of the garment is only very slightly faded; so slight as to not beapperent in the photos. This is quite common on antique kimonosthat are dyed blue or purple using the dye murasaki, which isobtained from a plant native to Japan. Murasaki was used on highquality garments and is a fragile colour so some degree of fadingfound on older kimonos is common. It does not detract from the lookor the integrity of the garment.

Pleasenote: Although the kimono is in very good, wholly originalcondition the following has to be pointed out:

Thestitching holding the top section at the back (around the neck) hascome loose from the main body.

Thestitching on one sleeve has come loose. There is no material missingfrom either this or the collar.

Thereis also a small worn area to the orange lining under the left sleeve(see photo 12)

Thereis only one small mark on the front of the garment (see photo 11). Thislooks as if it could be easily removed but I have left this for thebuyer who will almost certainly know more than I do about cleaning, pressing etc. For the reasons above I am selling “as seen”. However, with a small amount of careful restoration this could be afine and valuable example of an original, antique, Japanese kimono.
