ANTIQUE J.OSWALD GOOGLEY- ROLLING EYE PEKINGESE/POMERANIAN DOG CLOCK
ANTIQUE J.OSWALD GOOGLEY- ROLLING EYE DOG CLOCK
This unusual little clock was made in the Black Forest somewhere between 1920 and 1930s. I'm sure the many collectors of these novelty pieces will be able to date more accurately, but If I settle for a window of 10 years after 1920, we should be pretty close.
If my dog recognition is correct, I think its a Pekingese or Pomeraniandog? I do know these clocks are widely, and avidlycollected. Because of this, there are many copies/fakes, mainly from China. This, however, is fully guaranteed to be the real thing.
The very early examples of these clocks were made out of carved wood, this one is of acomposite material. It is wonderfully bright colour and patina. To the rear is stamped "Ges Gesch" and to the base, along with the green baize, is a label.
The movement iswound via a fixed key at the rear and is stamped "J.Oswald Germany, No Jewels, Unadjusted".The clock is working, even keeping fairly good time, but no boubt would benifit from a service.
Asthe clockruns, the time is displayed via the dog’s eyes. The left one shows the hours (marked out in the eyelashes + pupil), the left one the minutes. All this is clever enough, but as the eyes move, so the dog’s expression changes.
I hope the pictures will tell you all you need to know, but having owned a few of these fine animals, I can say with all certainty, that it will "add" to any collection, and always draws acomment from those that see it.
If a question answered or an extra photo will help, please just drop me a line.
Good hunting in 2013
