Description:

For sale here is this superb Japanese Satsuma pottery koro (incense burner), dating from the late Meiji Period. The koro is marked to the base; I believe the first part reads \"Kutani\", then the artist\'s name (? Zan), then \"Sei\" (made). It is also impressed with a Satsuma mon and what looks like \"J.SHIN\" or \"J.CHIN\".

This exquisite piece has an absolutely charming tiger finial and Oni demon mask handles. It is very finely painted with a continuous scene of a garden with rock-work and birds. The gilt work and brocade patterns are exceptionally finely executed. The lid is pierced with leaf-shaped apertures and the neck is decorated with moulded cord bows.

Size:

The koro measures approximately 7 1/4 inches (18.5cm) in height.

Condition:

It is in very goodantiquecondition, with fine restoration to the noses on the mask handles and to the extreme tip of the tiger\'s tail. Please view all photos for details, as these form part of the description.
