This sale is for anAntique Synagogue Temple 7 Branch Menorah from the 1890\'s
This magnificent and majestic Antique Synagogue 7 Branch Menorah from the 1890\'s arrived with immigrants escaping religious persecution in Eastern Europe in the early 1900’s. This sacred artifact was given to me by my immigrant neighbors (from Eastern Europe, Lithuania) in the town of Great Neck NY: it is solid brass, very heavy weighs approx 11 lbs and has intricate scrolled branches supporting 7 candle cups atop drip pans. Multiple knops on banded stem with decorated base attachment. The dimensions are 21” high X 18.5” wide.It is in very good condition for a well used antique that has been in storage for a very long time.

The 7-branch menorah is one of the oldest symbols of the Jewish faith;in the First and Second Temples it had seven branches.It is found mostly in temples and synagogues, often up front as an item by itself, and also as a design in stained glass windows, ceilings & wall murals, paintings, sculptures, and more.The 7-branch menorah is a symbol of the Jewish faith and was always present in the Temple when it stood in Jerusalem and is made according to the commandment in Exodus:

Exodus 25:31-32

31\"You are to make a menorah of pure gold. It is to be made of hammered work; its base, shaft, cups, ring of outer leaves and petals are to be of one piece with it.32It is to have six branches extending from its sides, three branches of the menorah on one side of it and three on the other.”

Priests would light it every evening and clean it every morning. Jewish sages teach that this menorah was the vessel that G-d used to blend the spiritual life that is to come with the physical life of this world. Ultimately, the purpose of this menorah is not to illuminate the temple but to spread its light throughout the world. It is a symbol of the nation of Israel and it is a physical reminder of the commandment in Isaiah 42:6 to be a light to the nations.A menorah stands in front of the gates to the Knesset building in Jerusalem. It was erected as a reminder of the indestructibility of the Jewish people; a truth that has borne true time and time again despite persecution, wars, and even assimilation.

It was the 7-branch menorah that was lit after the Maccabees had their victory and rededicated the Temple, and the oil they found that was only enough to burn for one day actually lasted for eight while more oil was being made and consecrated. In synagogues the Ner Tamid is a continuously burning lamp which hangs over the ark. It is a symbol of the \"western lamp\" which was the eternal light that constantly burned in the Temple of Jerusalem. Furthermore, it is a symbol of God\'s unwavering presence and our never-ending faith in God so they never put out the flame. It also symbolizes the guiding light of the Torah and the ever- lasting covenant between God and the Jewish people. They are also intended to draw parallels between God and fire, or light, which is emphasized throughout the book of Exodus in the Torah.In a Reform synagogue, it is often used to symbolize the light released from the shards of the receptacles that God used to create light and goodness.
