THIS ITEM IS A VERY ATTRACTIVE, DECORATED STONEWARE JAR FROM ASIA MINOR THAT STANDS ABOUT 10 1/2 INCHES HIGH AND 8 INCHES IN DIAMETER. IT WAS COLLECTED BY AN OIL EXPLORATION GEOLOGIST IN HIS OVERSEAS WORK DURING THE LATE 1940\'S TO THE 1970\'S. HIS WIDOW NOTED THAT IT WAS OLD AND FROM ASIA MINOR, PROBABLY WITH A ORIGIN IN TURKEY, IRAN, OR IRAQ. BECAUSE OF THE HEIGHT OF THE LID, I WOULD THINK THAT IT EITHER HAD A SPECIAL USE OR WAS MEANT TO BE DECORATIVE. IT IS AT LEAST 19TH CENTURY AND MAYBE MUCH OLDER FROM THE PRODUCTION STYLE, DINGS, AND USE MARKS, WHICH DO NOT DETRACT FROM THE PIECE BUT SUBSTANTIATE SIGNIFICANT AGE.
