Russian Icon: \"Archangel Michael with Saints: Florus , Laurus, Spiridon, Vlasiy \"

Description: Russian South-West Slavonic region. Judging by the style of execution, the simplicity of the composition and the modesty of colors in the artist\'s palette, perhaps, this icon was painted by monk of local monastery, which usually was located on the bank of the river or the lake, with a streams, filled with the natural earthly minerals or stones , used as a pigment for the paint of egg tempera.
Medium:egg tempera on the wood panel.
Size: 15 1/8\" height; 12 3/4\" width[38.3 cm x 32 cm]; thickness of the panel 3/4 inch [2 cm]
Condition: Good and stable state of preservation typical for the antique 19th Century Russian Icon. Two slats on verso are missing. See photographs.
Iconography: The Archangel Michael ranks as the Greatest of all the angels, he is considered the angel of mercy and immortality. He is depicted holding the Mandylion; on the sides are St. Spiridon (left) and St. Vlasiy (right). Far left and right depicted twin brothers, Saint Martyrs Florus and Laurus, both were revered as saints-patrons of the horse-breeding.
Important provenance:This icon is from the Estate of the Duchess of Caylus, Ludmila Progery ( the dynasty of the Duke of Caylus, d 1679) The Duchess was the niece of the Russian artist Alexandre Yevgenyevich Iacovleff (Russian-French, 1887-1938). Good friends andneighborsof the Duchess home in Tuxedo, New York, The Callvery family, were a Distant relatives of Abraham Lincoln.
