Antique Eastern (Russian or Ukrainian) Orthodox silver medal pendant featuring iconic images of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Assumption of Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. Handmade from solid silver, \"84\" hallmark (cast, soldered and struck by hand of a silversmith).Beautifully preserved, \"Museum-like\", antique condition. The edges of the medal with the inscriptions in Church Slavonic are inlaid with blue enamel, well preserved. Origin likely c. 19th century of Imperial Russia. The necklace loop is structurally sound and robust. The medal is slightly scratched and worn out due to its age and wearing. Authentic artifact from Europe. 100% sound and wearable.
The reverse of the medal pendant bearsan oval, iconic image of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or Falling Asleep of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, it is known as the Dormition (\"Uspenie\" in Russian language) of the Theotokos, celebrated on the same day as the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Western Church.
Both Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches believe that it was taking up of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of Her earthly life.
In the Orthodox Church iconography of the Dormition of the Theotokos, Jesus Christ is coming from Heaven to receive His Mother\'s Soul symbolically depicted a a newborn baby coming to His Hands from the Body of the Blessed Virgin Mary surrounded by the Twelve Apostles. A similar iconic image is depicted on this medal.
The inscription framing the image in Church Slavonic is inlaid with blue enamel and translates as \"ICON OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD\".
The obverse of the medal pendant bears an oval iconic image ofSaint Nicholas (Russian: Nicolay or Nicola), one of the most renowned and venerated Christian saints, and a historic 4th-century Greek Bishop of Myra. He is venerated by Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran Christians. The inscription in Cyrillic letters framing the iconic image translates as \"SAINT NICHOLAS OF MYRA THE WONDERWORKER\".
