This is a beautiful hand-carved real Whitby jet pendant with locket back,dating from the mid-Victorian period.
The pendant is a mourning piece and is decorated with a classical maiden that is carved in deep relief.The reverse of the cameo has a photo locket with pinchbeck frame containing a picture of a small child.It has a large jet bale which will accomodate a thick chain or a ribbon.
There are some cracks to the jet commensurate with age as jet is a fragile material,but nothing to worry about as it is very sound.At some time the bale has been re-attached but this is also very secure.
The pendant is very large and impressive,measuring 8 cms long including the bale and 4.7 cms wide.
A lovely Victorian jet pendant that would grace any collection.
