ANTIQUE VICTORIAN PAIR OF LARGE STERLING SILVER FISH SERVERS c1866:
$562.21

Here on offer is a beautiful pair of large antiqueVictorian English hallmarked Silver Fish Servers, in their original case, circa1866.

The pierced silver blade and four-pronged fork are finely engraved onboth sides with ornate leaf designs. The servers are fitted with fine and impressive hallmarked sterling silverhandles, ornamented with leaf festoon emanating from a floral motif, surmounting an oval shaped cartouche to each terminal

Each handle is further embellished with anembossed ribbed border in addition to a scroll and pendant drop design to theupper portion.

The hallmarks can be clearly seen on the blade, fork stem and bothcollars of the handles.

The hallmarks show the Lion Passant,an early queen Victoria’s head and an Anchor, indicating they where assayed inBirmingham.

The blade has a date letter Sfor 1867 and its handle has a date letter Rfor 1866.

The fork has a date letter Rfor 1866 and its handle has a date letter Sfor 1867.

This is not unusual to have a mix of date letters as the componentswould have been made at different times by the same manufacturer and assembledwhen new sets where required or ordered.

The maker’s mark on all four componentsis JG, which I believe relates tothe well-known silversmith, John Gilbert who is listed in 1865as a silversmith and electroplater at Ryland Street North, Birmingham and at anoffice at Ely Place, Holborn, London, England. In 1880 the firm was convertedinto a limited liability company under the style of John Gilbert & Co Ltd.

These antique fish servers are fitted to the impressive original hinged red leatherettebox with satin and velvet lined interior, which secures with a push fitcatch.

The servers are in excellent untouched original condition and have a slight silver patina but will polish up to a bright shine as required.

The case has some marks to the satin and tiny holes where the forkpronged have rested inside the lid.

The fork measures 9.5” (24.2cm) long by 2” (5.1cm) wide and the blade is13.3” (34cm) long by 2.3” (6cm) wide at its widest point.

Combined they weigh 330g and 700gincluding the case.

Pleasesee my pictures for the details of the condition, which complement thisdescription.
