ANTIQUE c1890 CROWN MILANO HP GLASS MT WASHINGTON CRACKER BISQUIT COOKIE JAR:
$1325.00

This is a rare all original Crown Milano glass cracker, biscuit, cookie jar from the 1890s. It has its original silver plated handle, frame and lid. The design on the lid matches the hand painted design of plum blossoms on the glass jar. It is masterfully hand enamelled/painted on both sides and the paintings raised, are in perfect condition and with no wear. The silver plated Pairpoint double rope handle with center ball separationand ashell design attachment to the simple classic collar is a perfect enhancement to the double dome lid with a rope design on the knop. This lid is deeply etched and chased with a two flower blossom designwhich matches the design of the flowers painted on the glass body. There is no damage, nor repairs on the collar nor the lid. It is bright and clean with very minor loss of silver due to age and use.The body is a Mount Washington Crown Milano: an opaque satin glass shading from a soft pink at the top to a pale creamy yellow at the base. It is decorated on both sides with a classic plum tree bearing pink and blue blossoms and pale green foliage. The blossoms have raised stamens and pistles; and raised gold gilt outlines. The leaves and the tree and branches all have raised gold gilt outlines. There is further decoration of a line of raised quarter circles separated byraised dots encircling the jar at the shoulder and around the based framing the paintings. This type of glass was originally called \"Albertine\" and was patented in 1893. The name was soon changed to \"Crown Milano\". Early examples had paper labels (long since disintegrated) and later examples were marked \"CM\" with a crown above and often \"Mount Washington\" or \"MW\". Perfect examples of Crown Milano glass are scarce and generally found only in museum and private collections. The subtle and controlled coloring of the glass, the masterful design and quality of the raised hand enamel painting, and its near mint condition make this one an outstanding example of museum quality. CONDITION: The condition is near mint. There are no chips, no cracks, and no wear to the enamel paintings; and very minor use/age wear on the silver plate.REFERENCES: There are many available references for this type of Art Glass. I have Ray and Lee Grover\'s book \"Art Glass Nouveau\" published in 1967.SIZE: 7 3/4\" to top of lid; 10\" to top of handle; 6 1/2\" wide at shoulder; 4\" wide atbase.
