ART NOUVEAU 1890s STERLING SILVER CHATELAINE RETRACTABLE MECHANICAL PENCIL:

This is an original circa 1890-1910, art nouveau, chased sterling silver, chatelaine retractable mechanical pencil. Also known as a magic pencil. Possibly crafted by George W. Heath & Company.

This magnificent piece is crafted from solid sterling sterling. In the collapsed position, the pencil in the holder has a length of 2 3/4\" (not including the smaller bail at the top). The pencil, when removed, in the fully extended position, measures 4 1/2\". Clearly marked sterling. Monogrammed with the letters DLW. Free of any dents, dings or splits. Has developed a fine patina over the last 100 years.

To operate the pencil, fold down the locking bail at the top, grasp the bottom end of the holder and pull upwards on the bulbous top, the pencil expands to full length as it\'s pulled from the holder. To close, reverse the process. The pencil is loaded with a piece of lead.

A very pleasing example of this scarce mechanical pencil.
