An original section of a mailing envelope with the autographs of PRESIDENT JAMES A. GARFIELD, written on the front panel in his own hand, and a statement of authentication on the back, written and signed by FIRST LADY LUCRETIA R. GARFIELD. This was apparently done to meet the request of an early collector for the President\'s autograph. Mrs Garfield states on the back that the envelope was addressed by General Garfield to her, but she cut off \"Mrs\" to leave his signature remaining.......JAMES A. GARFIELD [1831-1881] of Hiram, Ohio, was a member of Congress and Major General in the Civil War. In 1880 he was elected President as a Republican, and served six months before being assassinated in 1881.
