Completely beaded on the front, this rare and beautiful Athapaskan / Cree beaded bag has a magnificent, colorful floral design on a field of white opalescent beads. Colors include Crow pink, robin’s egg blue, apple green, navy and an unusual navy with white center, cranberry, amber, bottle green. Bead size of the field is approximately 13/0 with foliate design 12/0.

The front of the bag is beaded onto blue and white striped cotton (similar to pillow and mattress ticking) and then backed with tanned moose or caribou hide. It is trimmed in maroon silk with an outer edge beading in clear and an inner more complex design of clear and amber beads surrounding the foliate. The interior upper flap is lined with eggplant-colored silk, and the interior of the bag with the striped cotton.

The loomed strap is 22 inches long by .75 inches wide with the four cardinal directions in blue on both sides at the beginning of the strap, and a green line through it indicating water or lightening. There are two areas on the strap with several beads missing and a broken thread (see two photographs for close ups). All other fabric and bead work is original and intact.

It is rare to find a bag of this size and beauty in such overall excellent condition. It is museum quality.
