THE AFRICAN TRIBAL COLLECTION

Being saleed to support our URGENT refugee aid project in the Moyen Cavally region. We have supported several villages in Cote D\'Ivoire and Liberia for several years. Due to conflicts in Cote D\'Ivoire and severe drought conditions many thousands of displaced villagers have become refugees in camps across the border or are piling into already crowded villages which do not have the infrastructure to support them. Several aid agencies have pulled out of the region. We are doing what we can to support them with food provisions and medicines for Malaria and Dysentery which has become a big problem.

BETENYABWAWARMASK

Cote from: Cote D\'Ivoire

Tribe: BETEGuere (Gere, Ngere)

Approx age: Mid 20th Century

Tribally used:YES

Measurements (cm):H38W27Depth 15

Condition:Fair - repaired cracks on claws

This mask was field collected from a remote village inCote D\'Ivoire by us. It has stunning and extremely rare and unusual Nyabwa claw features. There is evidence of locally repaired cracks to 2 claws but they are very secure. The red band across the eyes means that it is a \'ZakPai\' mask and that it belonged to afire marshallin the village. We do have pictures of it taken in the village with the owner and it comes with a certificate of authenticity from a well known gallery which will be given to the winning buyer.

Bete carvers are renowned for one particular type of face mask, the gre or nyabwa , which
has exaggerated, grimacing distorted features – a large protruding mouth, facial
protuberances, bulging forehead, elongated nose, with nostrils sometimes extending to
each side of the face, and globular or bulging slit eyes set beneath a high-domed forehead
carved with a medium ridge. In earlier days, this mask presided over the ceremony held
when peace was restored after armed conflicts and it participated in sessions of customary
justice. This type of mask was also worn to prepare men for war; the masks offered magical
protection by instilling fear and terror in potential enemies.

THE AFRICAN TRIBAL COLLECTIONExcellent quality Tribal Art at sensible pricesYOUR BEST SOURCE FOR AUTHENTIC AFRICAN ANTIQUES(MUCH OF THE SALES PROFIT GOES BACK TO HELP SUPPORT VILLAGES IN WEST AFRICA)We are a husband and wife team based in the UK with strong personal links to Ghana and much of West Africa. Over the past few decades we have been passionate collectors of African antiques with particular interest in tribally used ceremonial masks and figures. We have both previously lived in West Africa for more than 15 years and have an extensive personal collection from our travels around Africa. African tribal art has been very sought after over the past decades and it is commonly known that tribal art has been plundered during this time and many \'copies\' have entered the market. However, with the right knowledge and expertise it is still possible to find nice authentic tribal art pieces in Africa. We also take requests from buyers to find specific pieces in Africa. We are in Africa several times a year searching for tribal treasures from \'untapped\' sources and our travels involve going deep into the remote villages. Our passion is for rare tribally used artefacts with excellent \'style\' and \'patina\' which have moved us. The sources for our tribal pieces stretch across Africa from Sierra Leone, Cote D\'Ivoire, Mali, Nigeria etc and down as far as the Congo. We have a house, a warehouse and an outlet situated on the beachfront in Accra in Ghana where we initially store the treasures from our African hunting trips. All pieces are fumigated prior to shipment from Ghana and upon arrival in the UK the pieces are re-checked for mould and any evidence of insects before we enter them into our collection. We have local experts in West Africa and we utilise their knowledge of the woods used and the carving styles of the relevant tribes to help assess the age and authenticity of the pieces we find. To keep up to date with the tribal art market we regularly attend sales in Paris such as Sotheby\'s, Christie\'s and Bonham\'s and we have had pieces appraised. Similarly, we have visited and acquainted ourselves with the well-established tribal art galleries and exhibitions in Paris in order to further our appreciation and knowledge of the \'style\' and \'movement\' of the various tribal art styles. The African Tribal Collection is not a charity but we are nonetheless passionate about Africa and tribal art and we are doing what we can to support various villages in Ghana, Cote D\'Ivoire, Mali and elsewhere in West Africa. We are currently working with several aid agencies locally including the \'Rita Marley Foundation\', Red Cross, American NGO\'s and local Chiefs. Michaela also runs \'FairTradeGhana\' helping to support the artisans and villages in the Aburi Mountains in Ghana by selling their amazing new crafted pieces via the internet. Please Google \'fairtradeghana\' for more info on our projects(NEW WEBSITES UNDER CONSTRUCTION)Please note that we do not take pictures in a professional studio Environment. We try to take the pictures in Africa where we find the items. Prior to shipment from Africa we fumigate the pieces but we do not polish or clean them with chemicals meaning that buyers receive the pieces as they were found. This, we believe, is part of the authentic African experience we try to offer. We always welcome questions, please email us via BIG POSTAGE DISCOUNTS FOR MULTIPLE PURCHASESSHIPPING COSTS TO THE USA AND THE EU ARE STATED IN items IN ‘POSTAGE SECTION’We send pieces securely packed and normally by recorded delivery with insurance Additional return policy details: RETURNS ACCEPTED WITH \'FULL REFUND\' WITHIN 30 DAYS OF DISPATCH (compared to 7 days offered by other sellers) IF YOU ARE NOT HAPPY WITH THE PRODUCT FOR ANY REASON!
