Full document on WAR DEPARTMENT stationary appointing Jacob A. Shindel to the rank of Captain as Assistant Quartermaster of Volunteers with orders You will report in person for duty to Major general Edward R.S. Canby U.S. Volunteers, Cmdr. Military Division West Mips (Mississippi) at New Orleans, La, signed EM Stanton, Secretary of War. He served under Lincoln for much of the Civil War and was active in tracking down John Wilkes Booth. On the reverse and penned in Lincoln's hand are revised orders as follows Capt. Shindel will report to Gen. W.T. Sherman, instead of Gen. Canby as written directed A. Lincoln Nov 5. 1864 There is some extensive separation at the folds which can easily be restored; fortunately this does not affect the Lincoln directive.
A wonderful item of Civil War memorabilia showing the active role that President Lincoln played even on the field.
