Offered here is an autograph letter written and signed by Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson(1758 - 1805), the British naval officer whose brilliant tacticsmade the British fleet victorious in battles against the French at theNile and at the Battle of Trafalgar, where he was mortally wounded by asniper. \"THE FRENCH FLEET IS AT SEA\": Fine content A.L.S. \"Nelson &Bronte\", 1p. large 8vo., aboard \"Victory\", April 4, 1805\" to \"Capt.Thomas\" of the mortar vessel \"H. M. Bomb Aetna\". French admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve with eleven ships of theline had escaped Nelson\'s blockade at Toulon only six days earlier, andhere the great British naval leader urgently seeks to gather his fleetfor an attack. He writes: Victory April 4th, 1805Sir,The French Fleet is at sea steering to the Southward Proceed off Cagliari fire guns and call out the[HMS]Seahorse and desire Captain Boyle to join me I am now standing to the Westward as I do not think the French will make Toro

M. Bomb Aetna Four days after this letter was written, Villeneuve would slip pastGibralter, bound for the Caribbean. The two fleets would meet six monthslater at Trafalgar. Fine condition. As illustrated in the attached images, a transcription of the letter appears on pages 393-394 of the sixth volume ofThe Dispatches and Letters of Vice Admiral Lord Viscount Nelson, published in 1846 by Henry Colburn, Publisher, Great Marlborough Street, London. Also included is a fine modern reproduction of a portrait of Nelson in his cabin aboard the Victory. The entire piece is archivally matted and framed and protected behind museum grade, UV blocking, acrylic glazing. The letter is @ 7 1/2\" x 9\". The outer dimensions of the frame are @ 18\" x 26\".
