Amint condition example of an original Afghan Army Type I, 2nd Classqualification insignia. This is a dress,or cloth version, in gold on a red wool background. The Para-Commandos began under King ZaherKhan in the later 1960’s and received initial training from USSFinstructors. With the coup against Khanin 1973, the Para-Commando brigades were decimated. But with arrival of Soviet instructors in1979 they began to and following the Soviet invasion the commando force rapidlyexpanded to form the 444th and 666th Brigades in Kabul. The 37th Brigade and then the 38th Brigade,based in Parwan, followed these units.Although the 26th Independent Airborne Battalion mutiniedagainst the Soviets and were crushed, by the 1980s, the Para-Commandos wereconsidered the only reliable force in the Afghan army and fought alongside theSoviets. During the Afghan war, theCommandos made several operational jumps but were finally destroyed followingthe Soviet withdrawal in 1988. It isbelieved that all of these thin bullion insignia were made in Iran in theearly 1980’s (when they appeared)
