“Taylor dida very cool thing when he painted this print. The image is based on a famousphoto and it is very accurate. Instead of just copying the photo he backed upthe scene and shows the plane that took the photo, \"Rita\'s Wagon.” Ialways thought of these low level straffers as being 100 feet away from beinginfantry. The Japanese ship in its desperate attempt to escape would runaground on a reef. It was eventually destroyed. The sailors swimming to shorenot far away were straffed in the water. Info from the book \"WarpathAcross the Pacific\".

When a groupof ingenious 5th Air Force engineers installed eight forward-firing.50-caliber machine guns in the nose of the B-25 Mitchell bomber, theyconverted a very good medium bomber into a devastating low-level strafe whichrevolutionized the air war in the Southwest Pacific.

The date isFebruary 16, 1944. Intelligence hasreported enemy shipping in the region of New Hanover, a large island west ofNew Ireland, and 41 stafers from the 345th have joined threesquadrons of the 38th Bomb Group to hunt them down. In the foreground the 500thSquadron’s B-25 ‘Rita’s Wagon’ having ranked the 420-ton Japanese Subchaser No.39 with machinegun fire, has released a bomb which explodes near the stern, probably damaging the steering gear. Theair and water is alive with flying shrapnel.A burst of flak from one of the ship’s guns rocks the B-25 as it makesits diving pass just above the masthead, and already there are signs of damageaboard the Subchaser.
