ALEXANDER HAMILTON. Alexander Hamilton (circa 1755–1804) was an Americanstatesman and politician who served as an aide to Washington during the AmericanRevolution, coauthored the Federalist Papers, and served as the first UnitedStates Secretary of the Treasury. InJuly 1804, sitting Vice President Aaron Burr, stung by a published criticismauthored by Hamilton, challenged the esteemed statesman to a duel and fatallywounded him.

AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT IN ALEXANDERHAMILTON’S HAND REGARDING A LEGAL DISPUTE BETWEEN HIS FATHER-IN-LAW, PHILIP SCHUYLER, AND POSSIBLYHIS KILLER, AARON BURR

Partialautograph manuscript in Alexander Hamilton’s hand consisting of 10 lines withnearly 40 words on the front and back of a slip of paper clipped from a largerdocument. The manuscript is an unknownlegal dispute between his father-in-law, PhilipSchuyler, and possiblyhis killer, Aaron Burr. Schuyler (1733-1804) was aU.S. Senator from New York in the 1st U.S. Congress from 1789 to 1791 until helost reelection to Aaron Burr (1756-1836).The manuscript measures 4.25” by 1.75”, in fine condition with stainingfrom adhesion, and reads in full: on the recto “Petition for a confirmationassigns a false motive – Minutes of counsel implied disapprobation” and theverso “Schuyler parted with all his Interestin 1723...[illegible]Schuyler of [illegible]…No easy talk…man in pos…been discou…Object Schuyler if…A.B[illegible but believed to be“urr”] supposedly”.

THE ONLY HISTORICAL DOCUMENT IN PRIVATEHANDS WHERE HAMILTON REFERENCES AND WRITESTHE NAME OF HIS FUTURE KILLER

Themanuscript has been attached to a letter of authenticity from Hamilton’s third son,James Alexander Hamilton. James(1788-1878) was present and sitting at his father\'s bedside when he died; inaddition, he served as the U.S. Secretary of State under Andrew Jackson’s administrationfrom March 4, 1829 to March 28, 1829 until Martin Van Buren, who had resigned asthe Governor of New York, assumed his duties as Secretary. The letter is one page, measures 7” by 4.5”,in fine condition with minor toning and attached to tick paper, accompanied with a steel engraving of Hamilton, and readsin full: “The above is the autograph of my Father Alexander Hamilton my own isnot worth having but I send to you this paper by James A. Hamilton”.

Anyhistorical document with an association between Alexander Hamilton and AaronBurr is virtually nonexistent and highly desirable. We were only able to locate one similar itemthat was a legal document containing Hamilton’s signature and Burr’ssecretarial signature and it sold for $18,750 at Doyle in November 2016.
