Easy to grow; simply water and place the bulb in a bright window. Flowers emerge slowly over a 5-8 week period, with most bulbs producing 2 or even 3 flower stalks.

Amaryllis How-To: Ever grow an amaryllis inside the house? It’s a snap. All you do is plant the bulb in a pot, water this “Magic Lily” and it zooms into growth. In just a few days then stems arise, and in a few weeks the enormous flowers begin to open. Huge lily blooms range from 8-10” across! Each bulb produces two or more stems, each with 3 to 5 flowers. You then have this big show for over a month.

Planting Amaryllis: Choose a standard size flower pot, so the large bulb as approx. 1” space around the sides and bottom. (These bulbs do not need much root space.) Use soil or a mixture of soil, peat, and perlite. Do not use pine bark! Place bulb so top inch or so of bulb sticks up out of the soil.

Watering: Water sparingly until the sprout is well out of the bulb. When first planted, place in sunny window and add bottom heat if possible (many do this by placing on a radiator). Plant will grow fine in cooler temperatures but will take longer to sprout, grow, and bloom. Once sprout appears, water regularly but do not over-water! Your amaryllis will grow quickly and produce its spectacular huge flowers. Remember to keep rotating the pot regularly to make the stalk grow straight; they will grow towards the light. Your bulb will produce several stalks with flower clusters. Leaves will begin to sprout either after it has begun to bloom or after it has finished blooming.

Aftercare: When all flowers are gone, cut off the tubular flower stems near the top of the bulb, leaving foliage to continue to grow. If flowers were pollinated, they may produce seeds, however, it will take 5-7 years to produce a flowering plant from seed. Water as usual and apply water-soluble fertilizer every four weeks, treating or growing this as a house plant. In Spring after danger of frost, set the Amaryllis plant/pot in the garden in a shady or part shade location for the summer. Continue to fertilize. The bulb is building up strength now for the flower explosion next Winter or Spring. At the end of the summer, place the pot on its side and allow the soil to dry out. Cut off the dry leaves, and in about 6 weeks repot your bulb in fresh potting soil and the growing cycle begins again.

**I have found that leaving plants in their pot during this dormant time works also, alleviating the work of un-potting and replanting. I also have found that waiting longer for dormancy (until frost or freeze approaches) strengthens the bulb but delays its bloom time into March or later. I have grown Amaryllis for many years, so if you want more information, please contact me. This is my second year selling Scarlet Baby (which I have been growing and multiplying for over 14 years), and other varieties. **
