THIS IS A VERY VERY SCARCE ITEM AND VERY FEW WERE MADE! And still fewer survive!!

American Flyer Company of Chicago, ILL Had this 5 1/2 inch long fountain pen made in the prewar period. I am estimating before 1940 and possibly earlier.

This fountain pen has AMERICAN imprinted on the pocket clip on the screw top. The American Flyer Lines decal is printed with a black background and gold letters.The decal has a gold border. The width is about 1/2 inch. The screw top is made of a plastic like material very similar to the early plastic used by both American Flyer and Lionel in the prewar period. The decal is identical to those found in the late 1920\'s American Flyer o gauge cars. The decal is found thru the 1930\'s.

The base of the pen 4 7/8 inches long. The gold lever says Made in the USA on it. The tip of the pen has AMERICAN 6 MADE IN USA imprinted on it.

Most likely this pen was given out to dealers purchasing trains from American Flyer sales offices. It is possible the pen was given away to dealers attending the Century of Progress in Chicago in 1933/1934.

J.C. Penney founded 1902, still in business. Catalog sales existed from 1962 to approximately 2011, still issuing a Christmas Catalog. Had 1000 stores in 1928. 1600 stores in 1941. Today, around 1060 stores.
Montgomery Ward founded 1872, closed 2001. Catalog sales only from 1872 to 1926. Catalog continued to be issued until 2001. First retail store opened in 1926, 531 stores in 1929.
Sears founded in 1886, still in business. Catalog sales from 1886 to 1993. First store opened in 1925. 319 stores in 1929.
