Rare American HistoricalStaffordshire ChildsPlate
UNCLE TOM’S CABIN ~ TRUE DEMOCRATStaffordshire England c. 1855

This scarcetransferware childs plate, circa 1855, measures 6-3/4 inches in diameter with apainted press moulded daisy floral border and scalloped rim. The sturdyironstone plate is transfer printed in brown and hand colored under the glaze.Decorated in a scene from the rareUNCLE TOM’S CABIN series, depicting Tomand Eva.

The platewould have been made for theAmerican market shortly after Harriet BeecherStowe\'s book \'UNCLE TOM\'S CABIN\' was published in 1852. Stowe was anabolitionist during the 1830s when she lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, alongthe the Ohio River, just north ofKentucky, a slave state. Thousands of runaway slaves passed through Cincinnatias they traveled to freedom along the Underground Railroad.

The younggirl in the image is the virtuous angelic character \'Eva\', thedaughter of Augustine St. Clare, who met Uncle Tomwhile traveling viasteamship to New Orleans where Tom was to be sold. En route, Tom rescued Evafrom drowning and her father eventually ‘bought’ Tom as a slave to the family. He became the head coachman and spent most of his time with the angelic Eva,whose character personifies the virtues ofselfless love andforgiveness. The scene on the plate shows Tom and Eva together and is encircled with the line from thebook ‘Your little child is your only true democrat.’

The plate is unmarkedand the maker is unknown. Most certainly made by a pottery manufactory in theStaffordshire region of England c1855.

The plate isin overall good condition considering its use by generations of children. No chips cracks or repairs. Substantial surface wear and scratching, paint fading and some loss of paint consistent with prior use. This was not a cabinet plate and was well used. Minor manufacturing and transferimperfections, typical of these early wares. These child size dishes fromliterary history are especially attractive. Collectors of anti slaveryAmericana and historical Staffordshirewill love this pattern! This is a rare plate and is being sold as is, as described. More photos available on request.
