This vase has a naturalistic,celadon jade-like and extremely thick glaze, and is simplistic in decoration, with2 slightly raised circles around the upper and lower parts of the neck and 3around the waist. Song porcelain mastersstrove to achieve naturalism and simplicity in order to reflect the taste ofSong emperor Hui Zhong. A square handlewith attached ring is placed on each side of the neck. However, due to thickness of the glaze anddifficulty in controlling firing temperature, the molten glaze spread andcovered not only the holes of the handle but also glue the ring to theneck. These are very importantcharacteristics of Song Guan wares and can be used as a criterion foridentifying Guan wares. After a thousandyears of aging the glaze has completely lost the glassy shine of newly firedporcelain. Under 25X magnification, theglaze surface shows numerous tiny holes that are filled with yellowish clayintrusion. Also can be seen are thewhite and dark green micro-granules/crystals suspending in a grayish-greenmedium. These microscopic features distinguishthe genuine Guan wares from later imitations and from most Long-Chuen celadons,both of which contain numerous bubbles, instead of micro-granules. Most of Guan wares are very small, usually 10to 25 cm. ; the size of this vase is consistent with this common characteristicof Song Guan wares.
