Ancient Chinese Han Dynasty Agricultural Farm Scene - 25 AD:

A wonderful ancient Chinese Han dynasty farm scene of a shepherd watching over his flock, dating between the late western to late Eastern Han period, around 25 - 220 AD.

A charming depiction, this wonderful piece is a fine example of the development of Han Dynasty art. The scene is one of pure chaos, the animals are shown standing and moving in every direction inside their square pen. The farmer, his figure reduced to the essence of form, is shown seated under a long cloak at the back, seemingly relaxed amongst the commotion of his flock. Sacrificing figural precision but emphasising the inner spirit of his subjects, the ancient artist has imbued this piece with a wonderful sense of vitality.

This enchanting artefact provides us with a precious visual document of the nature of life in ancient China around the turn of the first millennium. The agricultural nature of the economy is clearly indicated here, and scenes such as this were produced as a visual representation of the hopes of the original owner to take his present life into the next.

The importance of the animals is made strikingly clear in this piece, it is notable that the farmer himself receives somewhat scant attention, rather it is his flock that are keenly modelled. With a fantastic sense of life, they roam about the confines of their pen, one can feel their energetic nature. As such, this is much more than simply a visual document, the scene is so distant, yet so relatable, it allows us a brief moment of emotional connection with the society it is depicting.

Diameter:7 ½ good, one or two areas of possibleminor restoration where animal figures have been reattached. Please note that the one sheep shownon its side is notmodern damage or a repair, but evidence of theancient firing. After being placed in the kiln, the figure appears to havefallen to one side, resting against the wall, upon firing it was then fixed into this position.
