Description:
A green glazed decorated jar and lid from the Yuan Dynasty. These type of jars were used as cinerariums. The jar has highly stylizedarchaicmotifs. Bright green glaze with somediscolorationon one side from being buried underground touching mineral deposits. Domed lid with knob top. The jar seats on a unglazedpedestalfoot. Some restoration to the top of the lid, otherwise intact.
These type of vessels were found in an ancient Buddhist site in China close to the Vietnam border. The Yuan Dynasty was a period in China controlled by the Mongolian elite, including Kublai Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan. The Yuan tolerated outside influences, including Christian and Hindu missionaries, as wellBuddhismandBuddhistmonasteries.
