Ancient Egyptian 3rd Intermediate / Late Period Hardstone Heart Scarab - 1075 BC:
$12500.00

A large ancient Egyptianhardstone heart scarab of extremely fine quality, dating to the Third Intermediate Period to Late Period, c. 1075 - 332 BC.

Naturalistically carved from black schist or similar hardstone, with a detailed clypeus and striated wing-case, the legs articulated, the underside uncarved.

Stunning in its intricate detail, this beautiful object is one of the finest Egyptian scarabs we have handled. Representing both rebirth and the sun god Ra, the image of the scarab was omnipresent in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians were highly superstitious, and amulets depicting the beetle were worn as conduits to sympathetic magic, used to attract power and protection.

As the scarab was important not only to the priestly/royal castes but to the average Egyptian labouring in the fields, many of the scarabs that survive today are roughly made mould produced objects of limited artistic value. Yet here we have a hand-carved stone example of remarkable quality, from the carefully polished surface to the intricately carved eyes and feet; this is the work of a craftsman working on behalf of the elite of Egyptian society.
