A beautiful ancient Romano-British running dog brooch, dating to around 50 – 200 AD.
Sleek and agile, thisevocativeportrayal of a running hound is full of charm. Cast with its ears pinned back and front legs stretching breathlessly forward, with the eye and a central recessed cell decorated in red and white dotted enamel inlay.
This is a simply superb example of its type, though the depiction is simple, it is superbly executed and survives in a particularly fine state of preservation – with the original enamel still vibrant and largely intact.
Animal fibula are in many ways the most fascinating of ancient brooches, giving a momentary glimpse into the life and thinking of those who wore them. Used by the ancient Celts as war dogs, the British hound was renowned throughout the ancient world as both fast and strong. Clearly superior to the continental breeds, it was exported throughout the empire for use in game hunting – indeed this scene may well be portraying the chase of the hunt.

Condition: Excellent, fully intact and with superb preservation of the original enamel, the pin slightly bent. Unrestored.
