An ink sketch highlighted with chalk on toned paper by AndreAbbal. Early Edwardian motorists are shown enjoying the pleasures of pioneeringmotoring. Signed and dated 1903.

Abbal is remembered today as one of France’s leading sculptors,but he was equally at home with a brush or pencil. He received his artistictraining at the Paris School of Fine Arts under the masters Mercie and Vingt. Aprecocious talent, Abbal exhibited at the Society of French Artist’s aged justtwenty. Further success followed with him being awarded many prizes, medals andawards culminating with France’s highest honour the Legion d’Honneur in 1933.
