Diamonds are precious. Because of this reason, many a time, they are mined from questionable sources, traded unlawfully and even used for funding terrorist organizations. Such diamonds are called \'blood diamonds\'. In order to guarantee that diamonds reaching the market are free from conflict and mined under ethical conditions from government controlled areas, certain policies have been put forward by various governments and recognized organizations.

In 2003, the United Nations introduced an international certification program called the Kimberley Process Certification System (KPCS). This process maintains a constant vigilance against blood diamonds by tracking the source of every diamond that is being traded. Now, almost 99% of the diamonds available comply with the Kimberley Process.

All diamonds at Fascinating Diamonds are conflict-free and certified by the Kimberley Process. We only deal with diamonds that have been obtained legally from reliable sources and which have not been implicated in funding wars, conflicts or other illegal activities.

In short, you can buy diamonds from Fascinating Diamonds with total reliability and a peaceful mind.

4C\'s of Diamond :

Diamond, the hardest naturally occurring material known to man, is also the most favorite gemstone. Believed to have been first mined in India thousands of years ago, diamond immediately drew attention and admiration due to its extraordinary grandeur and unique optical, mechanical and chemical properties.

With more and more varieties of diamonds hitting the market, experts found it necessary to develop some basic guidelines to identify its diverse characteristics and grade them. Of these guidelines, four of them, otherwise known as \'4c\'s\', are the most important.

COLOR

Diamonds are available in an assortment of colors. With colors ranging from pure white to red, blue and pink, selecting a diamond could be difficult as each one will dazzle you almost equally!

So what is the most important aspect to be considered when you are looking for a top quality diamond? In simple terms the most valuable diamonds are pure white, clear and transparent and have the capability to reflect light with unequalled brilliance. As can be imagined, such diamonds are very expensive and also quite rare.

The color in diamonds is caused by the presence of certain elements or impurities. Since white diamonds do not have any impurities they are colorless and as per Gemological Institute of America\'s (GIA) grading system, are represented by D, which is the top grade. The subsequent grades, which go on till the letter Z, have slightly growing traces of color ranging from nearly colorless to light yellow.

More color means lesser value. Of course, it might be difficult for an untrained eye to make out the slight differences in the various grades, but the price variations are significant. By going for nearly colorless diamonds, of say I or J, you could get a good diamond at much less price. The shape of the diamond, the cut and the type of the metal used for the ring also contribute to the overall visual appeal of your jewelry.

And what about the diamonds of vibrant colors such as blues and pinks? In fact, these fancy-colored diamonds are grouped into a separate category Z+. These diamonds are considered to be very valuable because of its rarity, brilliant colors and uniqueness and are quite expensive.

CARAT

In ancient times, merchants from the Middle East used the seeds of the carob tree to measure the weight of diamonds because of its uniform size and weight. The present day word \'carat\' has its origin from \'carob\'. It now represents 0.2 grams and is considered as the standard for weighing diamonds.

Carat weight of diamonds is determined with high precision, usually to a hundred thousandths of a carat. When the weight of the diamond increases, the carat value increases and so does the price. Therefore a larger diamond will cost much more than a smaller diamond. Also note that two ½ ct diamonds will cost less than a 1 ct diamond.

Carat does not however define the actual shape of the diamond. It is possible that two diamonds of the same carat weight may look different because of the difference in cut and shape.

Another way of expressing weight is by means of points. 100 points refer to a 1 ct diamond; 75 points refer to 0.75 ct and so on.

Always consider the taste of the person who is going to wear it before making an order. If she likes it simple and elegant then small diamonds will obviously be preferable. If you favor big diamonds, then buy something of a higher carat value. You may also buy a diamond of less carat value which has been cut skillfully to make it look bigger. Also small ring sizes will make the diamond look larger. A tip to reduce the price is to buy diamonds of carats slightly less than a full carat.

CLARITY

Every diamond has some flaws and imperfections on the surface (blemishes) or internally (inclusions) which are either easily visible to the naked eye or only under magnification. The extent of such flaws determines the clarity of a diamond.
A diamond of ideal clarity will be perfect in every way with no imperfections. The light entering the diamond will be reflected completely giving it a brilliant sparkle and luminance. Such diamonds are very rare and nearly do not exist.

Diamonds which are nearer to perfection are graded as Flawless under GIA clarity scale. As per the scale, the number and size of inclusions or blemishes, its position, its effect on the overall brilliance etc. determine the grade. The scale is divided into 11 under the following categories:

  • Flawless (FL) - No blemishes or inclusions under 10x magnification by skilled grader
  • Internally Flawless (IF) - No inclusions; there may be slight blemishes visible only under 10x magnification by a skilled grader
  • Very, very slightly Included (VVS1, VVS2) - Very, very small inclusions which are difficult to find under 10x magnification by a skilled grader
  • Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) - Very small inclusions which are easily visible to a skilled grader under 10x magnification
  • Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) – Small Inclusions easily visible to a skilled grader under 10x magnification and which may be visible to the naked eye
  • Included (I1, I2 and I3) – Considerable number of inclusions clearly visible to a skilled grader and may even be visible to the naked eye
  • Flawless diamonds are sought by those who are very particular about truly high quality. If you want to shop within a budget range, VS and SI graded diamonds would do just fine and give you good value for money.

CUT

In the natural form, diamond is rough and crude and will not have the sparkle and brilliance that we are familiar with. It is after a series of cutting, shaping and polishing procedures that diamonds are fashioned into what we see as the end product.

The proportions given to a diamond to enable it to reflect maximum light and produce a superior visual appeal is called a cut. It is the cut that defines each of the facets or the faces of the gemstone and determines how it plays the light falling on it. A very important factor among the 4c\'s, a good cut can improve the appearance of even low cost diamonds while a bad cut can destroy the beauty of the most expensive diamond. Round brilliant is one of the most popular and well proportioned cuts with 58 facets
