Original Victorian 14K Gold Seed Pearl, Turquoise Slide Form:double pierced slide chain pendantDesigner:unknownPeriod:mid 19th century, c. 1840 - 1880Origin:USAStone(s):natural pearls, Persian turquoiseMetal:14 karat to 16 karat rose, yellow & green goldHeight:1\" (25 mm)Width: 7/8\" (22 mm)Depth: 7/16\" (11 mm)Hole Size: 3/16\" (4.5 mm)Weight: 7.6 g (4.9 dwt)Stone sizes: (3) pearls: 1 mm diameter; (2) turquoise: 1.5 mmHallmarks/Signed:unmarked, tested as solid 14k - 16K goldCondition:very good antique condition

A lovely antique Victorian gold slide, larger and earlier than most, this one has it all. The gold is solid 14K to 16K (tested electronically, slightly different karats on the various elements) and includes rose gold, yellow gold and the rare green gold (seen on the bellflower). Elaborately chased scroll and vine designs cover the face with taille d\'epargne or black tracery enamel decoration in ribbon bow and dot forms. The 3-dimensional design has a crescent with applied leaves and stalks holding seed pearls and Persian turquoise cabochons. The back has an ornate calligraphy monogram of AJA. The size is 1\" tall, 7/8\" wide, and 7/16\" deep, large as slides go.

Slides are probably more familiar today in the form of bracelet charms, but the original function was to allow for the wear of very long chains, sometimes doubled and sometimes forming a Y shape with fobs, charms and other jewels attached. The style began in the early Victorian period (c. 1840s) and did not typically involve watches at that point, though wear with pendant watches became more common as the 19th century progressed. Later 19th century slides grew smaller, were often not solid gold, and had thinner paired holes for thinner-width chains. Based on the size of this one, and the 3/16\" diameter holes for the chain, we would estimate the age at about 150 years, 1850s to just after the Civil War, but before the Aesthetic movement really took hold.

It is in very good condition, especially considering the age. One turquoise stone is a little high and off-angle in its bezel but completely stable, it takes magnification and viewing at an angle to detect this. Ever so slight losses to the black enamel in a couple of places, but surface only, no missing sections, and again, only visible under magnification. Otherwise it is perfect, light patina to the rosy yellow gold body commensurate with age, normal slight oxidation to the green gold bellflower and rose gold leaves. There was much and diverse labor involved in creating this, from hand chasing of the microscopic scrolls to building up the elements, enameling, setting of stones, and engraving of the back. The leaves on the crescent form are a very reddish rose gold while the lower bellflower is green gold with a textured surface. The pearls are natural pearls, not cultured, and the turquoise cabs are genuine. The main body of the slide tests between 15k and 16k, the bellflower and applied leaves at 14k.

Overall it is a lovely little handmade jewel, of course fully wearable on a long slide chain today, but also easily worn as an ordinary pendant by passing the chain through both holes. (See photos as example, chain not included. Any chain will work, but it should be noted that the end ring or clasp must be narrower than 3/16\" to pass through, otherwise the ring must be removed and reattached. It would look better on a thicker chain, and work again as a slide if the chain is thick enough, but we didn\'t have anything on hand that had a narrow enough end ring.) This is not mentioning wear on a bracelet of other slide charms, though it is significantly larger and with better quality craftsmanship than most 20th century copies of such slides, so perhaps more suitable as a central element. Even as 19th century slides go, this is superior to the majority of surviving examples, meaning AJA, whoever she was, was a woman of means. We like to think that if AJ could have known that her gold slide would be an object of admiration 150 years later, she would approve of its being prominently worn in the 21st century --or beyond, who knows, as this is certainly heirloom quality.

Shipping:
  • In the USA: Insured domestic Priority Mail is typically between $8.75 and $11.45 for up to 3 items of jewelry, though it can be slightly more, depending on values insured. All parcels must be insured or otherwise trackable. We only ship using boxes, no (we think, risky) padded envelopes.

  • International: E-mail us for rates to your location. International buyers are responsible for any customs duties levied by your respective governments. Postage is at cost, no handling fees, but be aware, international postage rates have greatly increased in the U.S., with little anyone can do about it. Because parcels can now only be sent by online-trackable mailing methods, a small box currently averages about $35 globally (6 to 10 days in transit). This can, however, typically include up to 3 pieces of jewelry. If considering a purchase from afar, please e-mail us first for a shipping quote on the item(s) in question to your particular location.

  • Combined Postage? We are always happy combine items. Combined postage is actual, based on the weight of the final parcel, and is calculated individually to arrive at the best possible rate. Combined shipping discounts require combined item payments. Therefore, for multiple items, please e-mail us before using checkout.
Payment Methods: PayPal
(PayPal offers choice of Mastercard, Visa, bank debit, or gift card.)
  • We ship within 48 hours of receiving cleared payment. If greater speed is needed, e-mail us for Express Mail rates.

  • Payments must be received within 5 days of date of sale unless a delay is approved in advance. is fun but it\'s not a game. A winning offer entails a binding contract. If you are unsure, please ask questions until you are sure. Sellers are charged fees whether or not items are paid for and, if not, must file non-paying buyer forms just to recoup the fees. No one wants that.

Terms:
  • Any damage or past repairs known to us will always be noted in descriptions but, should a minor flaw or some small sign of past wear be missed, the buyer is trusted to understand that some inconsistencies of this sort are to be expected in a vintage piece, as part of the definition and appeal of authentic vintage, and do not constitute material misrepresentation. Unless specifically stated otherwise, all our items are antique or vintage and should not be expected to seem brand new. For purposes of e-sale, the placing of offers on items described as \"vintage\" or \"antique\" shall constitute acknowledgment that both vintage and antique mean that, almost without exception, an item has been previously worn.
  • Authenticity: Designer brands or signed pieces are always authentic and sterling silver and karat gold described as such are genuine, we guarantee it. We evaluate items rigorously.

  • Returns: If a refund is desired please contact us directly within 24 hours of receipt of the item. If we were in error (i.e., demonstrable material misrepresentation), refunds are of course in full. For refunds for reasons other than error on our part, we are forced to charge a 15% restocking fee, in order to offset our costs. We make every effort to exhaustively describe each unique item, combined with magnified photographs from every angle. Please read the description with care, examine all photos provided, and ask questions until you are confident about your decision.

  • Returns must be approved in advance, must be sent with full tracking, and must arrive in the condition dispatched within 14 business days. We cannot accept partial returns. To avoid lost time with issues of subtle color variation, as many shades appear slightly different depending on the calibration of each screen, we expend great effort to provide numerous enlarged views of every item. (Each object is unique; the one pictured is always the one you will receive. We have no duplicates of anything.) If hue or shade is very important to you, please e-mail us prior to offerding and we\'ll send you the corresponding OAC number and/or a digital color swatch with the hexadecimal color code(s) which, in our view, most closely matches the item in natural daylight. (Such are the color hurdles of e-sales but, with forethought, they can be cleared.)
