DESCRIPTION: During the 18thcentury, meals were cooked in the hearth or fireplace, and cooking pots andpans were designed for use in large open hearths. This meant that all cookingvessels had to be designed to be suspended on, or in, the open fireplace. Castiron pots were made with handles to allow them to be hung over a fire, or withspider legs to stand in the hot coals. Blacksmiths made wroughtiron trammels, cranes and spit jacks to hold the pots, pans, and roasting meatspits. We are pleased to offer this pair of antique rare earlycolonial blacksmith wrought iron open hearth spit jacks from New England circa1700s for your consideration. The pair of wrought iron spit jacks are finely wrought witha decorative candy cane spiral and a fine goose neck ending with tiny rat tailend.The rare wrought iron spit jacks would have sat inside a largetall open hearth and would have held a cross bar to hang pots and pans.Acooking spit could have also been suspended from the pair of wroughtiron jacks. Each spit jack is shaped at the top to form a decorativeswan’shead design ending with a finelywrought rat tail twistedend. Each spit jack is handmade from a single iron bar and is decoratedwith a detailed candy cane twist. Each wrought iron spit jack rests uponafour legged base with large penny feet. The pair of antiquewrought iron spit jacks arein excellent condition with anageappropriate patina.You will look long and hard to find anotherpairof antique colonial spit jacks, as they are so rare andseldom foundin such fine condition.
