DESCRIPTION:Whale oilwas as luxury of the American colonies in the 17th and early 18thcentury primarily used as an illuminant in lamps and to make candle wax. In the 1700s, it was noted that the burningoil from sperm whales glowed brightly and clearly and did not have such a foulodor. The sperm whale was the mainsource of lamp oil until the petroleum industry took over in 1859. Oil lamps date back to before Christ. The earliest lamps were nothing more then abowl to hold the oil and a floating wick.Little change until the 1700s, when whale oil lamps began being madewith a single closed channel or reservoir to hold the oil and feeding one ormore smaller channels to hold the wicks. In 1780, Aime Argand, a Swiss chemist, invented and patented the “ArgandLamp”. His lamp consisted of container for oil as all the other lamps but had cylindricalwick to give larger surface for a larger flame and glass tube chimney aroundthe flame to direct the draft, make a stronger flame and make lamp safer forcarrying. By early 1800s the Argand Lamp had all but replaced other typesof oil lamps. A Whale Oil Lamp made of brass like this would have been found ina wealthy affluent home.
