An exceptionally large, solid sterling silver serving spoon from the second half of the 18th century, from an unknown \"HFL\" German or Denmark . The piece is not the ordinary oversized serving ladle as it appears in the form of a super-sized place or tablespoon.
Early, slight fiddleback design on the handle end also shows a slight \"ridge\" running vertically down the spoon\'s middle. The backside of the bowl is decorated with an incised, stylized shell. A stippled-engraving \"F.G.H. 1797\" is seen on the back of the handle. Two identical \"HFL\" hallmarks are pressed into the front handle.
Piece measures 14\" Long. Bowl measures 4 3/4\" Long x 3 3/8\" Wide x 1\" Deep.
Spoon weighs 5.61 ozt or 174.4 grams.
Good to very good. Specks of dark black surface tarnish show along the handle\'s front stem and the bowl\'s interior lip. Approximately three nicks in the backside of the bowl show through on the opposite side. Two areas of distinct scratching noticeable at the connection between the bowl and the handle (picture ), and on of the bottom bowl(picture ). Bowl\'s edges are not chewed or dinged. The spoon\'s weight is evenly distributed and sits so well in the hands; the entire piece\'s shape is well-preserved and exactly as it was when it first came into existence over 200+ years ago.
