Christian missionaries arrived Japan with Francis Xavierand the Jesuits in the 1540s and briefly flourished there. This rare originalbronze medallion dates from 1550-1620 Japan, and is known as the “FUMIE” IMAGEof Our Lady of Guadalupe. It is identified by the missing angel at her feet. Mostof these medals were lost during the Christian purges, when Catholics were madeto destroy the image with their feet or be crucified, as seen in the postedpictures.

A similar oval shaped medallion ispictured in the reference work ENCICLOPEDIA GUADALUPANA, by Xavier Escalada,published in 1995.

This museum piece is and original antique bronze that wascast in Mexico at a Jesuit workshop, during the time of the Manila-Acapulco GalleonTrade. It is one of the earliest surviving medal images of Our Lady of Guadalupefrom the 17th century.

Its size is 4 inches, by 2.75 inches, and is 1/8thinch thick. The weight is 5.5 ounces
