From my compass collection: Here we have anAntique1800\'s Gentleman\'s Mahogany Wood Cased Pocket Compass, Brass Hinges & Hook. These square-type wood pocket compasses are very early vintage. This is the precursor to the metal watch case type of compass that Gentlemen carried in the 1900\'s. This compass is not Maker marked. The wood case appears to be Mahogany and is in Very Good condition with two brass hinges and a brass hook for closure. Case is a nice small 2\" square by 5/8\" thick which allowsit to be slid in and out of the pocket easily.The wood is in very good condition with minimal nicks or scratches. No cracks or repairs.
The outer Compass ring is tightly fitted. The paper compass dial is divided by 1 degree graduations (numbered every 10 degrees) up to 360 degrees. There is a nice \'fluer-de-lis\' symbol to designated North. There is a blued compass needle that is marked N and S. In addition, when the lid is closed, a brass needle lift lever is activated to stop the compass needle from swinging. The crystal is in very good condition with no chips or cracks. Compass face is 1-1/2\" in diameter. Nice one for your collection! No owner\'s marks.
