DESCRIPTION: We are pleased to offer this outstanding rare New England Shaker huge apple gathering basket fromSabbathday Lake Shaker Community, Maine, circa 1800s for yourconsideration. Sabbathday Lake was founded in 1783 and there are just afew shakers left in this community. Thisis such a beautiful shaker apple basket with a glorious old patina. Itis like no other in comparison for size and quality of workmanship, which theNew England Shakers were known for. The antique huge double handled NewEngland Shaker apple basket is made of oak. The antique shaker apple basket has beautiful copper tacks that were used throughout the basket tosecure the bentwood oak slats to the bentwood circular bands. There are two thick one inch overlapping bands that support theoutside of the shaker apple basket. The handles on the antique shaker apple basket are flat and one inch wide runningthrough the rim and ending in the middle bentwood circular band. This construction was to maximize the strength of the basket,yet maintaining its beauty and quality. There are two layers of overlapping wooden bentwood slats that form the body ofthis huge shaker apple basket. One layer is on the inside and the other is onthe outside of the basket. There are two rounded wooden planks on the bottom ofthe basket. One rounded plank is on theinside and the other is on the very bottom of the antique shaker made apple basket. The inside wooden rounded plank has some loss, due to thefact that the basket was used to gather clams by a Maine fisherman in it\'slater life. The bottom plank is undamaged and supports the study strong antiquebasket. The antiqueNew England Shaker Basket is in excellent condition with an age appropriate patina.

MEASUREMENTS: 14 1/2 inches high including handles, 19 inches wide, and 57 inches round in circumference.
