antique 1879 Franco Prussian War bayonet with original matching numbered scabbard. Overall length is approximately 26 inches with a 20.5 inch long blade. Cursive writting etched on spine \"Mre d\'armes de St Etienne Fevrier 1879\" which means it was manufactured by the French National Armory of Saint Etienne in February of 1879. This fits the Gras rifle and could have been used by the French, the Germans, the Spanish &/or the Italians. The side of the guard is marked with a fancy \"P\" and numbered \"2758\", which is the same number \"P 2758\" on scabbard. There appears to be three stamped marks on the guard on the curled part that difficult to make out. No other markings are visible/detected. Press stud moves freely. Rifle mounting end is solid brass and has a nice patina. Blade is in uncleaned condition and is mainly brite with some toning from use plus has some corrosion down near the guard. Scabbard and guard are black casted iron. Wood grips are tight against blade and show some wear, dings and light scratches. The blade tip is pointy and the edge has no nicks.
