Up for offer is a Antique 1890\'s-1900\'s 5 String ACME Professional Banjo...!! This hard-to find early banjo will be fantastic for your collection or to possibly play...!! I purchased this banjo in the Chicago area and it needs to go to a good home as I am running out of room.
This great old 5 sting banjo is marked ACME PROFESSIONAL on the dowel stick. An internet search shows was most likely made for Sears & Roebuck in the late 1800\'s or early 1900\'s. They were made by a variety of companies including S.S. Stewart. Banjo shows no other markings that I can see. Banjo shows wear from normal use and storage including scratches, scuffs, marring and some discoloration to metal parts. A complete description to the best of my ability is below:
Condition is overall nice as shown. Neck is overall nice with what looks to be original finish and shows a nice shine. Scale looks to be 26\" as measurment is 13 1/2\" from nut ot 12th. fret. Heel area has very nice heavy carving as shown...!!Neck has a period metal neck brace / adjuster. Dowel stick is intact and marked ACME PROFESSIONAL. Has a wedge style neck clamp with 2 hardwood wedges as shown. End bolt is intact and looks vintage. No breaks, cracks or repairs to neck that I can see. Neck show a slight bow as do most of this era and could most likely be straightened by someone who knows how or used as-is. Fingerboard looks good overall and is secure to neck. Fingerboard shows some divots in the first several frets from play as do many older banjos. Fingerboard shows a small missing piece approx 1/8\" x 1/8\" at bottom of neck and could be left as it is a it is not very noticeable. Frets look fair with some wear and are intact. Pearl inlay design is very nice as shown and features Moon and Stars adding a nice vintage touch that was common in the early days...!!Several small pearl inlays are missing as shown in photos. These should be easy to replace and would make a great winter project. Tuners are of the friction type and may or may not be original. One tuner on the head stock is missing the body and looks to have a metal nut in its place. This style tuner is easily found on and one or all could be replaced or repaired with a little effort. Rim / Pot assembly looks nice overall. The Spunover metal on the wooden pot shows a nice patina and the wood rim under it looks good with no breaks or repairs. The shoes look original and have a nice patina. The hooks and nuts look to be newer replacements but still look good on this banjo. Tail piece is marked ELTON and is in overall nice shape with normal wear. Tail piece has what looks to be a soldered repair on the inside that does not affect it. This banjo has a nice skin head that looks newer...!! Metal tension hoop looks nice overall with nice patina. Tension ring does not have a cut out notch by the neck, therefore it needs to sit a little lower than hoops that have the notch. No case. Sold as-is with no guarantee of present or future function.
Overall, this looks to be a great early 5 String Banjo that will be a welcome addition to your collection or to play with a little TLC and setup...!! These older banjos are getting harder and harder to find...especially in this condition. Get this one while you can...!!
