ANTIQUE FRENCH STYLE PORCELAIN URNS

This sale is for a pair of very old porcelain urns with tops, and some very suspicious markings. Each urn stands about 13 1/4\" tall with their lids in place. The top mouth of the bases are about 5 1/4\" in diameter and the bases stand about 10\" tall with out lids. The portrait panels are artist signed, the metal footed bases are embossed with a maker, possibly Henry, and the lids have an early Sevres factory mark adjacent to an oval marked S 41. I believe this set to bean earlycreation of the forger Edme Samson, probably mid- 18th c.

The pieces show considerable age and aging, but not the quality of craftsmanship attributed to Sevres porcelain;their components closely match midto late 18th c.hand crafted Austrian porcelain. I suspect that the oval \'S 41\' mark attributes this set of antique decorative urns to the forger Samson.

Both bases show no damage and no repairs. They have general signs of light surface wear and discoloration of metal fittings. The lids fit properly into the top metal bands. The lion side mounts are loose and no attempt was made to tighten the back nut; they appear flush to thesides but there is a little gap that allows the rosettes to rotate.

Both lids suffered significant damage and appear to have had old restorations; restored crack lines are obvious as well as discoloration to the white glazed areas as indicated in the pictures. There has been some \'touch up\' painting to the top gold and turquoise blue scroll work on these lidsto disguise thisprevious damage.

As a set or individually, their presentation for display or for decoration ismuch better than their condition statements might indicate.
