FRAMED ANTIQUE 1700\'s HAND COLORED ENGRAVING \"OPTICAL PRINT\" OF AUGSBURG, GERMANY PUBLISHED BY FRENCH BASSET

The engraving depicts a street view withtownhouses in the free Imperial city of Augsburg inthe south-west of Bavaria, Germany. It is titled in French with \" VUE PERSPECTIVE DU MARCHE AU PAIN VERS LA MAISON DE VILLE A AUGSBOURG\" and inscribed with the publisher\'s address \"A Paris chez Basset rue S. Jacques a Se. Geneviève\".

I believe the piece to be from the mid to late 1700\'s.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries there were many popular specialty establishments in Paris, Augsburg and London which produced optical viewing devices and special engravings to be viewed through them. The prints were called perspective views, or vues d\'optique and the devices \"optical machines,\" \"optiques,\" \"zograscopes\". In the 18th century the optical print or vue optique came into existence, whose exaggerated converging lines were intended to produce the optical illusion of deep recession.

The item comes in overall good condition for its age. Vintage wear on the frame like scuffs and marks but no cracks, chips or other major damages. No cracks on the glass. The mat shows quite of wear. I would say the engraving itself is just in a good condition foe being that old. The white areas quite quite darken but the plate itself is pretty clean. Of course, there are some spots, small marks and other flaws throughout but not enough to detract form its beauty. I don\'t see any tips or tears but if any they should be minor. The uneven coloring is due to the hand made process.
