In 1912, Leo Schlesinger introduced this set in two color ways: red and gold and this one, blue and silver. I think the blue-and-silver set was made on cheaper tin and may have been produced for a less-expensive market, given that it is only a two-color litho process. The red set is much more detailed. I\'m not really sure what\'s being depicted on the set, but all of the illustrations are of children dressed up in fancy, old-fashioned clothing.I love the fact that it\'s over 100 years old, and the children on the set are dressing up in what would have been 100-year-old dress for them.
This sale includes four pieces from both the red and blue sets: one blue cup, one blue saucer, one blue tray and one red tray.The cup is marked, \"Made in U.S.A.,\" as Schlesinger was known to do.

SCENES:Cup: There is a scene in a medallion on each side of the cup. In one is a boy in colonial dress, while a girl in a long dress, holding a staff, is in the other.Saucer: A boy in a soldier\'s uniform with a plumed hat sits on a drum. He holds drumsticks in his right hand and a staff with a ball on the end in the other.Blue tray: Three children--two boys and a girl--stand in the center of the tray against an off-white shield shape. The boy on the right holds the girl\'s hand, while the boy on the right delivers a letter. The scene is surrounded by a blue background.Red tray: The same scene on the blue tray is on the red tray, though the children are set against a gold frame, surrounded by red. The red background has gold arabesques and a very decorative gold-and-red border and gold rim. The children\'s clothing, too, is more colorful and everything is better articulated.
DIMENSIONS:Cup: 1 7/8\" tallSaucer: 3 1/2\" diameterBlue tray: 9\" x 6 1/4\"Red tray: 13\" x 8 3/4\"
CONDITION:Cup: The cup is in excellent condition, with only a few tiny patches of paint loss and a little spotting. The interior has darkened, but there are still areas of silver.Saucer: There is a fair amount of spotting on the rim and around the boy\'s head, as well as some paint loss on the blue border.Blue tray: The tray has a number of dings and dents. There are areas of paint loss, but most of them are on the blue background. There are just flea bites on the litho.Red tray: There is litho loss on the image and some spotting on the gold frame. There are also some dings and dents and a semicircular rust mark below the girl in the center. It looks like someone, years ago, left his or her filled tea cup on the tray too long. There is wear on the gold rim.
