Antique 1920s Rose Pink Chiffon & Gold Lace Afternoon Tea Dress:

This dress is still in very excellent condition. However, it is fragile and should not be worn, except maybe for a photograph. It is a gorgeous shade of rose pink, which has not faded over the years. I would say it dates from the mid to late 1920s, probably around 1926. It is of very lightweight and semi-transparent chiffon, and was definitely meant to be worn with a full slip. A few of the fabric covered buttons are missing, but these could easily be replaced by taking a bit of fabric from the generous hem. The dress has been rather inexpertly repaired by a previous owner with neat small stitches, but in a color that does not perfectly match the fabric. I restored the hem, which had almost come totally undone, but I decided to leave the previous repairs alone as they really do not detract from the overall beauty of the dress.
This dress was given to me by a student in one of my costume classes sometime in the early 1980s. I have never worn it, although it fits me and I would judge it to be around a size 10. The dress used to have two fabric ties that were attached on either side at hip level. They were meant to be worn (I think) loosely tied in the front - or maybe in the back. Unfortunately, one of these ties has gone missing over the years, so I pinned the remaining one in front to approximate the look (see photo #2). Like with the fabric covered buttons, this missing tie could be replaced by taking fabric from the hem. I would probably leave it be, however, and tie it on the side in some creative way. Of course, if I find the missing tie, I will reattach them both as they once were.
