Two-Piece Needle Case with Six Crochet Needles

circa1780-1865

This original and authentic lathe-turned Needle case dates to about 1780-1865. It measures about 7.25\" long x 1.1\" in diameter.

The two sections of the wooden needle case slip neatly together with no threads. Included with this case are the six (6) original crochet hooks that came inside the case. The six, steel crochet hooks of different sizes all have hooked ends and were most likely made in England during the early 1800s. Two of the longer needles are marked \"BOYLE\" on one side and \"1\" for the smallest hook and \"12\" for the larger hooked one. They were manufactured by John H. Boye\'s company that still produces fine needles and hooks. Another hook just has the emblem of an eagle with the number \"10\" on the other side. And the last 3 steel crochet hooks appear to be unmarked.

This wooden case is solid and is in remarkablecondition for being over 200 years old.It does have black paint loss from ancient use that is consistent with its age and the steel crochet hooks show some light oxidation (rust). The thin, inside collar of the wood case does appear to have a stable, age crack that is covered when the top lid is on. It could easily be repaired by the new owner. Please see the attached macro photos as they are part of the description. It displays very nicely!

DETAILS

No sailor on any sailing ship in the 18thor early 19th Centuries would be without one of these little beauties in his pocket.

Thisis a lathe-turned, wooden case that would have held an assortment of differentsize needles for use in darning and repairing sail cloth and clothes. As it was made of wood, it would float incase it was accidentally dropped overboard. It was very likely made on ship during a sailor\'s off-duty time.

Thereis a similar case pictured on page 142of Francis Lord\'s referencebook, Civil War Collector\'sEncyclopedia, Volume V.

This case is hand-made and carved from wood; it measures about 7.25\" long in its closed position.
