In this sale we have a 19th century bronze \" The Marly Horse\" or \"Horses restrained by grooms\" sculpture after the original marble statues created by Guillaume Coustou during the 18th century. Two large marble sculptures representing horses restrained by grooms were commissioned in 1739 for the horse pond in the gardens of the Château de Marly by King Louis XV. In 1743, the king chose the models exhibited in the Louvre courtyard; the marble sculptures were installed at Marly in 1745. In 1749, they were moved to Paris on the initiative of the painter David, and placed on high pedestals at the bottom of the Champs-Elysées.
Measuring approx. 10-3/4\" tall by 9\" long & 4\" wide, the horse was cast in two sections and there is the slightest movement between the two sections, and a loss to one reign, but we found no other apparent losses or restorations, just light wear from age. A work of diverse inspiration, commissioned to replace anotherThe statues of Fame and Mercury, commissioned by Louis XIV from Antoine Coysevox for the horse pond at Marly, were taken to the Tuileries in 1719. Louis XV discovered the Château de Marly in 1739 and, to fill the gap left by the removal of the sculptures, commissioned two groups from Guillaume I Coustou (Coysevox\'s nephew). Coustou\'s achievement rivaled that of his deceased uncle with its technical prowess: two colossal works, sculpted from a monolithic block of Carrara marble in the record time of two years (1743-45). Many details, such as the bridle (now broken), the tousled mane, the light and floating tail, and the bearskin on the horse\'s back, required delicate carving.
The artist was probably inspired by the antique statues of the Dioscuri with their rearing horses in front of the Quirinal Palace in Rome, and prestigious examples of such horses from French sculpture of the 18th century, such as the Horses of the Sun by the Marsy brothers (a model of which is in the Louvre). He was no doubt sensitive to the recent masterpiece by Robert Le Lorrain (c. 1737), a high-relief for the stable at the Hôtel de Rohan. Above all, he drew his inspiration from nature, studying the movements of men and horses from live models.
Emulation and innovation
The novelty of this work lies in the absence of any mythological or allegorical reference. It represents primitive nature, a struggle between two wild forces: an untamed horse and a naked man, athletic muscles straining. Coysevox\'s military trophies have been replaced here by reeds and rocks on an uneven ground. The powerful, thick-necked horse shows every sign of panic and anger: rearing up, tossing its head and whinnying, with dilated eyes and nostrils, and a tousled mane. The almost invincible force of nature seems about to break free again. Wherever the spectator stands, the impression of movement, strength, and violent struggle is perceptible. A moment in time has been captured, heralding something of the Romantic works of Géricault. Indeed, Victor Hugo admired \"those neighing marbles [...] prancing in a cloud of gold\". Coustou claimed to have sculpted (American) Indian slaves, which explains the quiver and feathered headdress that have fallen to the ground in the struggle. The reference is approximate (one groom appears to be from the West, the other African), but the sculpture prefigures Rousseau\'s idea of the \"noble savage\" - an idea already propagated by the accounts of travelers and missionaries.
Protective transfers
From the outset, Coustou\'s horses were considered to be masterpieces of French sculpture and were spared the fate of the Château de Marly (destroyed during the Revolution). In 1795, on the orders of the painter David, they were taken to the Place de la Révolution (now the Place de la Concorde) at the bottom of the Champs-Elysées, to join the sculptures of Coysevox. The Marly Horses were moved to the Louvre in 1984 to be conserved, and were replaced by copies on the Place de la Concorde and at Marly.

Unfortunately, in today\'s market with \'s rating system and the never ending rate increases in the U.S. Postal & other carrier rates, we need to define and explain our methods of business.
ONE - Who We Deal WithWe sell and ship worldwide to anywhere, so please email us for a quote to wherever you happen to be.
TWO - TrackingWe are required to put tracking on every package, even if it raises the cost of shipping it.
THREE - Shipping ChargesWe charge shipping based on the USPS system. We will sometimes ship via courier if we can get it to you within the same time frame or faster. We add a reasonable cost for materials and handling. Our materials cost is based on exactly what it has cost us to wrap similar sized items in the past. We realize that almost everything we sell is valuable to you and there is nothing worse than having something break in its final journey to your hands. We do our best to pack properly and use the correct materials to protect your win. If we are able to get the item to you for less than our quote we will refund the difference to you!
For oversized items or items that will take special attention to package, (building a crate, wrapping many small items individually, etc.), we ask you to email us for a quote on shipping prior to the sale ending. If you do not, we charge the same amount as if you did.
FOUR - International ShippingWe charge shipping based on the USPS international system. The rates follow the same guidelines as number 3 above, though for international customers we add an additional $1.00 to cover the extra paperwork involved in international shipping. If an amount goes over $100 in value we will only ship it with Priority or Express Mail, regardless how small an item. That allows for us to have international tracking. We have to include tracking even on First Class Mail, so we can not just throw something in an envelope and stick a stamp on it.
FIVE - Insurance\'s policies no longer allows us to charge the client for insurance. However... we still apply insurance to any item that goes over $27.00 in value. We reserve the right to use the insurance carrier of our choice. Sometimes that is Postal or the Carrier\'s Insurance and sometimes that is a private insurance company such as DSI or U-PIC/Shipsurance. If we use a private insurance company the package will not be marked insured, though it will be covered.
SIX - Methods of Payment AcceptedWe aoffere by \'s rules and try and stay abreast of their changes. We accept Paypal. Paypal also accepts the major credit cards, or we also take Credit Cards Directly over the phone, (MC, VISA, DISCOVER, AMERICAN EXPRESS, CARTE BLANCHE, DINERS CLUB, JCB) Bottom line, whatever method is most convenient for you.
SEVEN - Time Frame To PayWe ask all sales to be paid for in the fastest possible time frame. (This is all we do for a living and we need the money to pay the bills and buy more unique and fun items to put up on ). If an item goes unpaid we report the transaction to to recover our fees, this counts as a strike against the winning buyer unless they step forward and pay.
EIGHT - Shipping Time FrameWe make every effort to ship in a timely manner. We are listing tons of items, and are just plain swamped, so we have to schedule a special time to pack and ship. We ship on a first paid, first shipped basis. (We do not ship any item until it has been paid and the funds have cleared.) With the ebb and flow of payments we manage to get everything out of the door within one week. If there is a rush, we will make every effort to work with you in getting it out of the door faster. As you can see from our response, we do not disappoint. OF COURSE, items that need special attention, crating, etc adds to the time frame of those items.
NINE - Local PickupSometimes it makes sense to come by and pickup your items. Sometimes an item is just too big for any other option. If you\'ve arranged local pickup with us, you must pickup the item within 30 days otherwise it will be subject to storage fees and/or relisting. Storage fees for items begin one month after being won, and the fee consists of $5 per item or 10% of the value, whichever is greater, each month it is stored. If the storage of the item exceeds 11 months or exceeds the overall purchase value, the item will be ours to resell in order to recover the storage fees.
