Antique Japanese SATSUMA THOUSAND FACE Ceramic VaseGenuine 19th century MEIJI URN

RARE ANTIQUE JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD SATSUMA Footed HEXAGONAL VASE with gold handles

Meiji period [1850–1899] Japanese Satsuma vase, VERY RARE hexagonal design has 6 softly rounded panels and aScrollwork raised handle on each side of the vase with gold gilt paint. Thevase sits upright on 3 triangular feet also painted gold.

This superb vase/ urn isexquisitely HANDdecorated in gold gilt paint and hand enameled paintedfigures. The brushwork is meticulous, very detailed, tiny, and masterful. The exterior has 2 different designs, one on each side.

Frontis finely hand painted with a group of 8 men and women: These would be known as the \"Immortals\"-including a Goddess with a BEADED GOLD MORIAGE halo and dress, and 2 geishas, dressed in elaborated brocade kimonos, highlighted with gold. Metal Cloisonne enamel outlines, and the shadings and colorations are delicate andextremely lifelike. There is gold applied throughout the paint, so that when the vase is in the right lighting, or turned a certain way, the figures and landscapes seem to glow and be envelopedin deep, burnishedgold. There are 3 mountain ranges and alarge temple building directly behind the Goddess.

Back of urn- serene masterpiece of a landscape- Mount Fuji with a lake, and a home on lake’s edge. Across the top and around the edges of this scene is a LUSH bower of vibrant twining vines filled with flowers and TWOLARGE BLUEBIRDS.Gold detailing is hand applied around each flower petal and feather- thousands of tiny brushstrokes.

Shoulder and top of vase along with the vertical areasseparating the 2 sideshave the 1,000 face designs with gold and very rich deep colos of orange, peach, blue-greens, and rust brown

A raised border adorned with intricate geometric herringbone designs, in raised enamel and gold, encircle the neck.

Marked on bottom with an artist’s mark which was glazed withblack before firing- I believe this was done for export pieces pre 1900 to cover the mark.

Please note: I am not accepting offers on this piece as it is extremely rare and museum quality. Serious buyers only please. I do not mark my items down in price, so when this piece is gone, it is gone.

Approx.5.5\"Tall x 7\"Across handle to handle x 3.25\" opening. Footed base 3.5\"

Excellent vintage condition for age, no flaws or damage to the painting and design- pristine. No nicks chips cracks scratches to feet or vase. Stunning. There is very light surface crazing to the glaze which has not \'foxed\' or darkened and is very difficult to see, just adds to the charm. Colors rich, gold mellow and very reflective. Some light normal/ gentle wear to gold on handles and at shoulder- pristine everywhere else. Inner vase has one very fine hairline crack to INNER underside of rim inside of vase which is less than an inch long and which does not extend into the outer vase or design, not structural. Tiny. 2 very small fleabite nicks to inner surface of rim- actually inside the vase- aged to the same color as the ceramic, miniscule, and not on the edge of the vase proper. Not sharp or jagged and very tough to notice.

A fabulous vase for display in any setting, terrific for a collector. A very special UNIQUE piece. Would make a marvelous gift.An heirloom.
