For Your Consideration - Antique 19th Century Reproduction of Gold Mycenaean Nestor\'s CupThe original was unearthedfrom a Mycenaean Grave by Heinrich Shliemann, who identified it as King Nestor\'s Cup, as referenced in Homer\'s Iliad, and is now displayed at The National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece. This reproduction of the original gold cup was done by Greek Artisan, Georges Pomonis in the late 1800\'s and bears his mark on the bottom of the cup. It reads \"G. Pomonis Athenes.\"Like the original, this copy by G. Pomonis is gold in color - likely electrotyping or brass/copper combination. It has two handleswith the doves on each at the rim. The cupmeasures 5\" Tall and 6.5\"Wide from handle to handle. The base is 2.5\" in diameter, and the cup, or drinking vessel itself, measures 3.5\" in diameter. Each Dove is approx. 1\" by 1\" and the stem, from base to the bottom of the drinking vessel is about 2.25\" distance. The Cup is in remarkably good condition, with someage relatedmentions, as follows - slight bend in the right handle, as the long thin slated handles are bendable or easily manipulated. Some tarnish or patina, although I did clean it up quite a bit. The inside of the cup itself has someage spots that didn\'t polish up as much. A slight upwardcurve on the backside of the base. The cup and base have some slight \"give\" if you wobble the cup, but it\'s very little give for a great amount of effort. The cup is not scratched or damaged, and the above mentioned issues were thingsI really had to inspect with a fine tooth comb, so to speak,in order to make my listing very detailed in its accuracy. This late 19th century reproduction of Nestor\'s Cup istruly a beautiful antique in and of itself, and the detailed work to bring to life the original is apparent in the artist\'s rendering. Although not much information could be found on Georges Pomonis, it appears he also crafted metals for royalty and military, also in the mid to late 1800\'s.There is another replica by a different makerwhich can seen at the HarvardArt Museum.Very few seem to exist, which makes this one even more rare/valuable.I will ship with the utmost care. Thanks!
