You are offerding on an antique 19th century stoneware alkaline Tobacco spit glaze 3 gallon pottery syrup or whiskey jug. I am by no means an expert, but I believe the origin of this bulbous shape with rounded lip jug to be from the Southern United States, perhaps the Carolinas or Georgia - you be the judge. It is covered in a beautiful dark drip over lighter brownish green glaze and has a wonderful hand tooled applied handle. You can see and feel the potter\'s rings! There are two double incised bands encircling the top of the shoulder, running inside the handle area. Appears unsigned - I see no marks or signatures. In as found condition: there is a 1\" x 1/4\" chip to the lip, a 9\" long tight horizontal hairline runs to the lower part of the handle, another 5\" long tight diagonal hairline runs down the side coming off of that one. There are a few scattered tiny surface dings to the body. The jug has overall typical light crazing to this type of ware and a firing line in the making running across the bottom as shown. Please study the photos as they are a part of the description. Stands 14 1/4\" tall with a 1 3/4\" diameter spout rim and measures 9\" across at the widest with a 7\" diameter base.Fresh out of an estate and offered here for the first time.
