Item DescriptionAntique 19th Handmade Melchior & Silver Niello CAUCASIAN Dagger Qama Knife SwordDetails

This is a 100% authentic Caucasian Dagger, the whole dagger is handmade and very fine engraved. It dates from the end of 19th to the beginning of 20th Century.

Besides the fine engravings there is a fine Silver Niello incrustations along the whole dagger - Please note that only the Niello is made of a silver alloy - its the darker material.

The condition is good as we received it, we have not made any restorations, it is as it came.

Note that it has 2 Fullers or blood grooves, 1 on each side of the dagger, each blood groove is located on a different spot on its side. The reason is that the blade is thin and they can not line up. Its also a rare way of doing them.

The shape of the qama knife, especially its blade, is similar to that of a Roman gladius. Used from Persia to the Caucasus, the qama was also very much influenced by this weapon of Antiquity. The kindjal daggers used by the horsemen of the Caucasus are also very similar to qama knives. The double-edged blade of the qama comes to an extremely acute point, which means this weapon is able to deliver outstanding cuts and thrusts.

The main material from which the Sword/dagger is made is called Melchior (alloy). The only silver elements are the Niello ones.

You can read more in internet, but here is what I got for you:

During the period it was made there were several types of Caucasian daggers, some of silver and other of melchior (alloy). The more expensive ones (silver )had to be subject to a larger tax by the feudal lord or emperor. Which made them harder to sell even back then. Hope I was of help.

    USEFUL INFORMATION:

Fuller (weapon)From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaPrussianbayonetBayonet for theLee–EnfieldRifle No. 5 Mk I \"Jungle Carbine\"In bladesmithing, fullers are often used in pairs. The upper fuller has a flat surface for striking with a hammer, while the lower fuller has a square peg that fits into the anvil. The fullers displace material in the blade, causing it to move sideways and bulge outward from the surface.

Afulleris a rounded orbeveledgroove or slot in the flat side of a blade (e.g. asword, knife, orbayonet) that are made using ablacksmithingtool ofthe same name (fuller). These grooves are often called \"blood grooves\" or \"blood gutters\" as well as fullers, although their purpose has nothing to do with blood. A fuller is often used to lighten theblade, much the way that the shape of anI-beamallows a given amount of strength to be achieved with less material. When combined with proper distal tapers, heat treatment and blade tempering, a fullered blade can be 20% to 35% lighter than a non-fullered blade without any sacrifice of strength or blade integrity. This effect lessens as the blade is reduced in length. A blade is said to be \"fullered\" after introduction of the Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Inmetallurgy, melchioris analloyofcopper, mainly withnickel(5–30%). Its name originates fromItalian:melchior, which in turn is distortedFrench:maillechort, honoring the French inventors of the alloy, Maillot and Chorier. The term melchior sometimes refers not only to the copper-nickel alloys, but also ternary alloys of copper with nickel and zinc (\"nickel silver\") and even a silvered brass. Melchior is easily deformable by application of pressure, both in the hot and cold state. After annealing, it has a tensile strength of about 40kg/mm2. The most valuable property of melchior is its high resistance to corrosion in air, freshwater and seawater. Increasing content of nickel iron or manganese improves corrosion and cavitation resistance, especially in sea water and atmospheric water vapor. The alloy of 30% Ni, 0.8% Fe, 1% Mn and 68.2% copper is used in maritime shipping, in particular for the manufacture of condenser tubes. Thanks to the nickel, melchior, unlikebrassandbronze, has not a yellow but a silver color. Together with high corrosion resistance, this silvery color is preferred for the manufacture of household Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Renaissance niello

The goldsmiths of Florence in the middle of the 15th century ornamented their works by means of engraving the metal with aburin, after which they filled up the hollows produced by the burin with a black enamel-like compound made of silver, lead and sulphur. The resulting design, called a niello, was of much higher contrast and thus much more visible.

    Kievan Rus

During the 10th to 13th century AD,Kievan Ruscraftsmen possessed a high degree ofskill in jewelry making.John Tsetses, a 12th-century Byzantine writer, praised the work of Kievan Rus artisans and likened their work to the creations ofDaedalus, the highly skilled craftsman ofGreek mythology.

Niello was used on a variety of objects including sword hilts, chalices, plates, horns, adornment for horses, and most prolifically, jewelry for women: necklaces, bracelets, rings, torques, pendants, buttons, belt buckles, headdresses, etc.

The Kievan Rus technique for niello application was first shaping silver or gold byrepousséwork, embossing, and casting. They would raise objects inhigh reliefand fill the background with niello using a mixture of red copper, lead, silver, potash, borax, sulphur which was liquefied and poured into concave surfaces before being fired in a furnace. The heat of the furnace would blacken the niello and make the other ornamentation stand out more vividly.

Nielloed items were mass-produced using molds that still survive today and were traded withGreeks, theByzantine Empire, and other peoples that traded along thetrade route from the Varangians to the Greeks.

During theMongolinvasion from 1237 to 1240 AD, nearly all of Kievan Rus was overrun. Settlements and workshops were burned and razed and most of the craftsmen and artisans were killed. Afterwards, skill in niello and cloisonné enamel diminished greatly.

The Ukrainian Museum of Historic Treasures, located inKiev, has a large collection of nielloed items mostly recovered from tombs found throughoutUkraine.
