A scarce & unusual Victorian combination folding rule, mechanical pencil, and quill cutter, made of faux ivory or ox bone, and dating to the latter half of the 19th century c.1860 - 80.
The faux ivory folding or extendableruler is a 6" two section example, hinged at the centre, andwith steel fittings, a locating pin, and is marked to both sides in inches with different subunits to each side
One side of the rule has a retractable pencil which slides in & out via a small button to the side. Turning the end of the pencil propels/ retracts the lead.
The other side of the rule has a hinged quill cutter, whichfolds out via a small thumbnail notch. The end of the cutter is marked FINE STEEL Please email if more photos required.
Condition is overall good with no damage, a good hinge,& light wear commensurate with age. There is surface rust to some of the steel fittings & the very tip of the quill cutter has been lost - please see all photos & click to enlarge.
The folded rule measures approx 3" x 1/2".
