Antique 19thC French gilded Sacred Heart of Jesus medal, signed Penin & Poncet:
$12.53

An oldFrench Sacred Heart of Jesus medal from the mid 1800s, signed by renowned medallists Ludovic Penin and Antoine Poncet of Lyon.

A small gildedFrench medal, made of base metal, with the Sacred Heart of Jesus on one side, surrounded by crosses, and with the IHS Christogram and the Crown of Thorns on the other, signed by twofamous 19th century medallists Ludovic Penin and Antoine Poncet.

The medal is typical of designs from the 1860s, as Ludovic Penin, the son of Marius Penin, was working until 1868 and AntoinePoncet is known to have been a prolific medallist (many unsigned) from the1860s into the 20th century. The Feast of the Sacred Heart was approved by the Pope in 1856 so the medal could have been created to co-incide with this celebration.

The little medal is in very good condition for its age, suitablefor a bracelet or as a pendant. It is 1.7 cm high including bail (5/8th inch) and weighs 1.3 gm including the jump ring. The signatures PENIN PONCET appear on the obverse below the portrait of Jesus.

Very nice antique item for a collection.
